If you’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD—or even if you're still exploring the possibility—you might be wondering how to get the right support in the workplace. The good news? There’s government funding available through Access to Work, and it could be a game-changer.
Access to Work is a UK government scheme designed to help people with physical or mental health conditions—including ADHD—get the support they need to start work, stay
in work, or move into self-employment.
The scheme is there to remove or reduce workplace barriers that might otherwise make work more difficult.
If you’re eligible, Access to Work can fund a wide range of support tailored to your individual needs, including:
🧠 ADHD Coaching – regular sessions to support focus, time management, organisation, and emotional regulation at work
💻 Specialist Software or Equipment – tools to help with planning, concentration, or communication
🗂️ Support with Work Tasks – help with structuring your day, prioritising, or managing overwhelm
🗣️ Assistance with Employer Communication – support in explaining your needs, adjustments, and working style
You can apply if you:
You don’t need to have a formal diagnosis to apply, although it helps. You don’t have to tell your employer in advance to start the process, either.
The application is done online or by phone. You’ll be asked some basic information about your job, condition, and the kind of support you think you need.
📌 Top Tip: The process can feel a bit overwhelming—and that’s completely normal.

🌟 You deserve support that works for you. You don’t have to figure it out alone. 🌟
Do I need a formal diagnosis of ADHD to apply?
No, you don’t have to have a formal diagnosis, but it can help speed up the process. If you’re waiting for a diagnosis but struggling at work, you can still apply.
What kind of jobs does it apply to?
Any paid work—whether you’re employed, self-employed, part-time, full-time, permanent, or temporary. It also applies if you’re about to start a job.
Does my employer need to know?
Not at the start. You can begin your application without telling your employer. If funding is approved, there will usually be some contact with your employer, but you’ll be supported through that.
Is ADHD coaching really covered?
Yes! ADHD coaching is a recognised form of support under Access to Work. It’s one of the most common types of support awarded for neurodivergent people.
Will I have to pay anything?
If you're self-employed or work for a small business, the government may cover 100% of the costs. Larger employers may need to contribute to equipment costs, but coaching is usually fully funded.
How long does the process take?
It varies—some people hear back in a couple of weeks, others wait longer. It’s worth applying as soon as you can.
